Basically, it's about three half-human, half-alien hybrid teenagers, who manage to live normal lives up until the day Max Evans saves a human girl from dying...
"Pilot"Opening scene shows Liz Parker writing in her journal.
"September 23rd, journal entry one. I'm Liz Parker and 5 days ago I died. After that, things got really weird."
Cut to the Crashdown cafe where Liz and Maria DeLuca are waitressing. Liz serves two total UFO enthusiasts, while Maria goes over to serve two burly-looking older men some coffee, but they rudely brush her off.
Max Evans keeps looking at Liz, which Maria brings up, but Liz manages to change the subject to Kyle Valenti, who she's dating. Maria just scoffs at it.
The two guys who brushed Maria off earlier, start yelling at each other and one of them whips out a gun. It goes off, and everybody ducks for cover. Maria calls out Liz's name when she sees Liz on the floor, only her bottom half showing and the rest obscured by the counter. Max anxiously looks at Liz, and quickly drops to the ground next to her. Blood is seeping from her abdomen.
Michael Guerin, Max's friend, keeps onlookers away while Max places his hand over Liz's stomach, asking her to look at him. She weakly obeys. He gets a rush of images, presumably of a young Liz, then pulls his hand away. The gunshot wound is gone. He tells her she's okay, then breaks a bottle of ketchup/tomato sauce and spills it over her middle to cover the blood. He asks her not to say anything to the police and just tell them that she fell and broke the bottle. Max and Michael take off in Max's jeep, as ambulance siren's wail closer.
The police and ambulance have arrived. Liz is fine, and the deputy sheriff (Owen) is taking Maria's statement and description of the two men. Sheriff Valenti walks in, and Owen fills him in on what happened. One thing that is brought up by one of the UFO enthusiasts is 'where is the bullet?' - no one has been able to find the bullet that was shot.
Meanwhile, Valenti is looking at all the tables when he zeros in on Max and Michael's table - there are 2 empty Tabasco sauce bottles on it. The female 'believer' brings up the fact that two boys around Liz's age were sitting there, and Liz tries to cover for them by saying she didn't know them.
When Liz gets home later that night, she starts to get changed then notices something in the mirror - she has a silver handprint on her stomach.
Next day - biology class. Max walks into class late and sits beside Liz. However, when he finds out that the day's lab class is going to be doing cheek tissue samples, he asks for a bathroom pass. Liz knows something's up, and does the sample on herself, before taking Max's pencil (which he'd been chewing on) and taking a sample from his cheek. The cells aren't anything like hers.
She grabs him as they leave class later and shows him the silver handprint on her stomach. He seems a little surprised. Then she confronts him about his cells not being normal, and thinking she made a mistake with them, but he admits she didn't get the wrong cells - what she saw is true.
Liz: Okay, um, so help me out here Max, I mean... what are you?
Max: Well, I'm not from around here.
Liz: Where are you from?
Max: (points upwards)
Liz: Up North.
Max: (points higher)
Liz has A LOT of trouble coming to terms with the fact that Max isn't human. He admits it openly. She basically freaks, but he begs her not to say a word to anyone about this.
"Liz, please? Now my life is in your hands."
Maria is talking to Alex Whitman, her's and Liz's other best friend. Alex is trying to calm Maria down, but she says Liz has been avoiding her and that something is going on.
Scene changes to a taco place. Max, Michael, and Isabel are having lunch, while Isabel is discussing damage control, i.e. what do they tell Liz? Max looks at her guiltily, and she realises Liz knows the truth. Michael says they have to leave Roswell, which Max and Isabel don't want to do.
Cut back to the high school. Maria accidentally meets up with Liz in the girls' bathroom, and she wants to know what the hell is going on. Liz denies anything is wrong and walks away.
Michael, Max, and Isabel are driving back from lunch when Valenti pulls them over. After asking for Max's driver's licence, he notices empty Tabasco bottles on the floor of the jeep. He walks back to his patrol car, and after driving off, Michael explodes, saying they have to leave now. Max tries to reassure them that it'll be fine and Liz won't tell anyone.
Liz is dropped off after a date with Kyle and, as she's reaching up for her key, her top moves, exposing the handprint to Kyle.
Later that night, Liz is on the roof of the Crashdown when she hears Max calling her - he wants to talk. They go down to the Crashdown to talk and Liz starts to get a little upset when she realises Max could see some of her thoughts. He offers to try to make the connection go the other way, so she can see he's still 'him'. The images she sees show her how deeply Max cares for her.
Liz (voiceover): Max Evans had put a force on me. It's like my whole life changed in an instant. It's just so ironic that when something like this finally happened to me... it was with an alien.
Later, Alex finds Liz alone and tries to find out what's been happening, but she tells him not to worry and that it's totally over... then Owen walks in wanting to talk to Liz.
She goes down to the police station where Valenti starts questioning her. He shows Liz some pictures of a dead man, with no apparent cause of death... but he has a silver handprint on his chest. The photo is from 1959. Liz says she's never seen anything like that in her life, but Valenti says Kyle told him a similar mark was on her stomach. Liz, of course, denies that too. He brings out her 'lost' bookbag, which has her bloodied Crashdown uniform in it, and asks if it's hers, which she doesn't answer. When Valenti brings up Max Evans, Liz again denies anything about him.
Later, Valenti is talking to a federal agent (FBI? CIA?) about Liz's uniform. There's blood on it, and a bullet hole in the middle. Valenti is riled up, trying to convince the Agent Stevens, but Stevens is somewhat non-plussed.
Liz again takes Max into an empty classroom and demands to know the truth. He agrees. She gets out a list of questions, which he answers. He doesn't know where he's from because he wasn't born when the ship crashed. Michael, Isabel, and Max were in some sort of incubation pods. The powers they have include being able to make connections with people, and manipulating molecular structures of things - which was how he was able to heal Liz. No one else knows about them - not even his parents. When Liz asks why Max risked all this just to heal her, he simply says,
"It was you."
Liz fills him in about her visit to Valenti's office and the photos of the corpse. Max says it's impossible. She also tells Max that Valenti suspects him. Max runs out saying he has to leave.
Max and Isabel pick up Michael that night to leave Roswell. It's the night of the Crash Festival.
Maria (in costume) walks into Liz's room and demands to know what Liz has been hiding. She threatens to tell Valenti what she does know if Liz doesn't tell her the truth. Liz tells her the truth about Max, and Maria flips out big time, running, screaming from Liz's room.
Max tells Michael and Isabel about the photos Liz saw - Michael is excited at the prospect of another alien, who can tell them something about themselves.
Maria and Liz are in Maria's car, driving down the road. Maria is still freaking, babbling nonsense, and Liz is trying to calm her down. They pass Max's Jeep and decide to follow the trio.
The jeep sees Valenti's truck ahead so Max take a quick turn into a dead-end alley. Maria and Liz pull in behind them, blocking the exit. Max, Isabel, and Michael walk towards Maria and Liz - Maria realises there are three of them.
Liz tells them that Maria knows, and Maria swears she won't tell anyone. Michael is furious (but barely controlled) and shoots down in flames Liz's idea that if they all work together, they can "throw Valenti off". A lot more words are exchanged before it's reluctantly agreed to try Liz's plan.
Liz turns up on Kyle's doorstep, apologizing for "acting like a real jerk", but promising to make it up to him by going to the Crash Festival. They'll need to meet there in half an hour. Liz then leaves and calls Max on her mobile/cell phone, letting him know the plan's in action. Michaels still thinks it won't work.
At the Crash Festival, Owen has been keeping a close eye on Max for Valenti, who starts to go after Max.
Cut to Isabel and Maria. Maria is rolling around in the dirt, trying to be as dirty as possible. She hands her car keys to Isabel, pleading with her to please not wreck the car too much.
Max is cornered by Valenti, who handcuffs him, and starts shooting questions at him.
Isabel is in Maria's car, and it looks like she's about to run her over.
Back to Valenti, Max and Owen - a car crash is heard.
Maria is lying on the ground, and a costumed person bends over her, placing a hand on her chest. The 'good samaritan flees, as everyone else runs up to Maria. Valenti pushes through to the front, asking what happened, when he notices a silver handprint on Maria's chest. He touches it, before someone yells they 'can see the guy' who went up to Maria. Valenti takes after him.
He loses the guy in the crowd, but then thinks he sees him standing near the podium. He races up to the guy... who turns out to be Kyle, wondering where Liz is. Kyle wanders off as Valenti looks at his fingers - they're covered in silver.
Scene cuts to Michael, who is disposing of his costume (that of the 'good samaritan') in a port-a-loo.
Valenti slams Max, still handcuffed, up against a van wall. He shows Max the pain on his fingers, but confronts Max about Liz in the Crashdown the other day. Max says he has no idea what Valenti is talking about. Valenti reluctantly lets him go, but warns him he will find out what really happened.
The countdown starts for the Crash Festival - they hit zero and the re-enactment of the crash plays out. Everyone goes wild... except Max, Michael, and Isabel, who look sadly at the burning fake bodies of the aliens.
Max sees Liz standing up on the hill by herself, and goes to talk to her. He tells her that it's not safe for them to be together. She tells him she doesn't care, which he seems pleased with, but he says no matter how much he may want something... more, it can't happen. They're 'different'.
Liz thanks him for saving her life, and he thanks her in return.
Liz is writing in her journal again.
"It's September 24th. I'm Liz Parker, and 5 days ago, I died. But then the really amazing thing happened - I came to life."
