Scene 11:
Isabel is talking to Maria and Kyle in her living room. Maria is saying how sentimental leads to a good-night kiss, and Isabel chimes in that a good-night kiss leads to sex. Kyle says that he should write this down. The doorbell rings. Isabel, because of the constant stream of visitors, is a bit exasperated. She opens the front door. Eric Hughes, a good-looking guy in rumpled clothes, stands there. She doesn't know who he is at first, but then puts it together just as he's introducing himself. He's Jesse's friend from Cornell. Isabel invites him in, and he looks around. Maria and Kyle wave. Eric apoligizes for missing the wedding. Isabel tells him not to worry about it. He says that he meant to, but got sidetracked. He got a "gig" up in St. Paul, and then in Chicago. Maria asks him if he's a musician. Eric says that he's a reporter.
Sitcom Version:
Isabel reacts. Now Eric looks like the classic reporter stereotype -- rumpled suit, fedora, smoking. "A reporter?" asks Isabel. Kyle and Maria look at each other, and say together that they should be leaving. They beat a hasty retreat. Eric starts snooping around the apartment, looking everything over. He says that he was really surprised when he heard Jesse was getting hitched. "You must be something ... quite out of the ordinary." "Me? No." says Isabel. Eric looks at her suspiciously. "Hmmmm." Isabel asks him how long he'll be in Roswell. Eric says that he'll be staying until he finds a story. His editor said that he has to come up with a "slam-bang" piece that will blow the lid off the place. He starts to sit down.
Normal:
Eric finishes sitting down. He says that he conned his editor into fronting his travel expense to Roswell by promising her a great story, so he's stuck there until he can come up with something great. Jokingly, he asks Isabel if she knows any aliens. Isabel gives a fake laugh.
Normal:
It's getting late. Inside the Ramirez apartment, Jesse and Eric having been catching up: eating pizza and drinking beer while reminiscing. Eric looks through their CDs while Jesse gets some more beers from the fridge. Jesse asks Eric if he's heard from their old friend Keith, who has been saying he was going to join the Peace Corps for years. Jesse tosses Eric a beer from across the room just as Isabel enters. Eric catches it easily, but Isabel still lifts her eyebrow at Jesse.
PAGE 41:
Inside Jesse's law office, Eric is struggling with his laptop while Jesse puts files into his briefcase. Jesse tells Eric to drop the story on Isabel and himself. Eric says fine, he will. He then asks if Michael touched his computer just before it crashed. Jesse says that Eric is insane. Eric says that his laptop is totally screwed and asks if he can use Jesse's. Jesse says sure, and that he'll be in court until four. Is Eric up to dinner with the in-laws? Eric says yes, since he has no other options. Jesse leaves. Eric sits at Jesse's conputer for a minute, then looks up and sees the filing cabintes. He thinks for a minute, then gets up and peeks inside, looking for something. He finds it -- a folder marked "Guerin, Michael". Eric puts the foler inside his jacket and heads out.
A few hours later, Eric is sitting with Sharon, a social worker in her fifties, at a picnic table. He's making notes on a pad. Sharon says that all adoption and foster records are supposed to be confidential. Eric says that he won't use her name in the article andhe won't quote her directly. Sharon looks away, and says that it was just a matter of time before somebody started asking questions. Eric covers his excitement and pretends that he knows what she's talking about. Sharon starts talking about an incident in 1989, right after they found him. They'd put him in a steady, reliable foster home, and he'd been there only two days before an "event" happend -- Michael made the kitchen table levitate about three feet off the floor. The family was very religious and felt that Michael was posessed by something, so they placed him in another home. A week after that, however, they got another call. Michael had gotten angry and melted their television set with his hand. Sharon says that there are about a dozen more incidents like these. Eric asks if they're all documented in Country records. Sharon says that there's not a word of it in any of their files. "Their files?" asks Eric. "Michael, Max and Isabel." answers Sharon. Eric is stunned. Sharon says that Max and Isabel only had one incident reported, but that was probably because they were only in one foster home before they were adopted. Sharon whispers that psychic phenomena runs in certain family. She thinks that all three of the kids are related. Eric swallows, his excitement building.
Isabel and Diane are putting dinner on a large card table set up in the living room, while Phil and Jesse set the table. Jesse is talking to Philip about his case. He thinks that the judge hates him. Philip says that she hates everyone. Isabel asks Jesse to get the potatoes out of the oven. He heads for the kitchen. Diane says that they need some more serving spoons. Isabel goes to their bedroom to retrieve a box of utensils from the closet. The back door opens and Eric enters, very excited. "You're too late to eat, but just in time to eat," teases Jesse before he sees the look on Eric's face. He asks what's up. Eric says he's got the story that's going to put him on the map -- maybe the cover of "Newsweek". Jesse asks what it is, as Diane heads into the kitchen. Eric says that it's the story of three little kids found wandering in the desert. "Three? You mean two." says Diane. Eric says that he's done a little digging. Diane is surprised that Michael was found out in the desert, too. Philip comes in and asks what he means. Eric says that all three of them were found the same night, but they just didn't know it at the time. Philip asks if Eric's sayin ghtat Michael is Max and Isabel's brother. Eric says that he has to be; he has the same abilities. Isabel returns with some serving spoons. "Abilities?" asks Jesse. "You're not still on that psychic thing?" Eric says to forget about that; this is way bigger than that. All three of them have special abilities, and all three of them were found out in the desert. They're all Roswell aliens.
Sitcom Version:
Eric bursts through the door, startling the sitcom versions of Isabel, Jesse, Diane, and Phil. "Oh my God!" he yells. "What?" asks Jesse. Eric is hyperventilating, and stammers, "I-I-I-I-I-" Philip tells him to settle down, and Diane asks Eric what's wrong. Eric takes a deep breath and says that there's a spaceship in the basement. Isabel and Jesse exchange a worried look. Fade out.
