If he said he wanted to wake up now, then that literally means at *some* point something was a dream-- and I refuse to acknowledge the first, but the latter-- Tess was a dream.
I mean come on! Did you see the way he woke up afterwards? (after the Tess scene?) and how he *really* didn't want to go and see her or be with her?

He didn't just feel bad for Tess. Otherwise why would he push her away all those times before? He was really cruel to her, never giving her a chance. Then he began getting to know her. In fact, he himself said that in MitC- she's always been nothing but faithful to him when he'd done nothing to deserve that.
As for everything being a dream- I could buy that if it wasn'tr for half a season. Not to mention that it's not just about him- we see stuff going on that he shouldn't even be aware of.

Ahh but I hated that "it felt like he was waiting for someone else" line. Maybe Ava was just paranoid
