yeah that... and honestly, two other points are-

1. Have you ever noticed a pattern that everytime Elena is in trouble- Damon is always the one *somehow* that really saves her?

2. Elena said a season ago to Damon, "If only I had met you first, then it might have been you and me." and the ironic part about it is-- she did meet him first in the Pilot. Remember? And she really liked him in that first moment (go back and watch it) and then Damon used his powers to make her forget she had ever met him. Then she ran into Stefan.

So, it really was meant to be from the very first episode.
