Whitney: Can we just not talk about Clark? (He turns away and takes a breath) Lana, I'm sorry, I didn't-- I didn't mean to freak you out with that whole moving in thing. I just... I just want to be with you all the time.
Lana: It's okay.
Act 2 Scene 2
Lex and Clark are playing pool at the mansion. Day.
Lex: Who knows what kind of inside information she's given him about my company?
Lex makes a shot and sends the cue ball into the corner pocket.
Clark: (Taking the ball out) Lex, you've been dating Helen for a while. But nothing you ever told me about her would lead me to believe she's the espionage type.
Lex: I'm afraid one day you'll learn the frustrating truth, Clark. People are seldom whom they appear to be.
Clark: Did she give you any kind of explanation?
Lex: Didn't get that far. When she learned that I had her investigated, she turned hostile and stormed out.
Clark: If I knew someone was investigating me, I'd be a little ticked off too.
Lex: (Putting down his cue to pour a drink) You want to know the most pathetic part about it? For the first time, I actually pictured a future with a woman beyond two months.
Clark: Did you ask her to explain her side of the story? It may not be what it looks like.
Lex: I wish I shared your eternal optimism, Clark.
Clark: I'm not sure how much of an optimist I've been lately.
Lex: Now that the quarterback's returned, you're back at your own one-yard line with Lana? (Clark nods) Be patient. Most quarterbacks' careers don't last that long.
Clark: It's not just that. I mean, I'm worried about him. Since he's been back, he's been acting bizarre, like he's someone else.
Lex: He might be suffering from posttraumatic stress. Some of my employees went through it after the tornado. I sent them to a specialist in Metropolis. They're all doing much better.
Clark: Maybe the specialist could help Whitney.
Lex: It's worth a try. If you want, I can get him an appointment this week.
Clark: Yeah, thanks.
Act 2 Scene 3
Whitney slams a yearbook down onto the table. Day. Mrs. Fordman is tied to a chair.
Mrs. Fordman: What happened to you?
Whitney: Answer the question! (He walks up to her and holds her head back by her hair) What is my favorite radio station?!
Mrs. Fordman: (Crying) I don't know.
Whitney: (Jerking her head) When I get in the car with Lana, that radio has to be on the right station. What is it?!
Mrs. Fordman: It's-- it's the one that plays loud rock. I-I think that that there's a sti-- a sticker on one of your old school books. (Sobbing) Please, please...
The doorbell rings. Whitney rips off a piece of electrical tape and puts it over her mouth. He answers the door and it's Clark. He steps onto the porch and closes the door behind him.
Whitney: What do you want now, Kent?
Clark: Look, Whitney, I know we've had our differences in the past. But before you left Smallville, I thought we'd come to an understanding. I'm worried about you.
Whitney: Worried about what?
Clark: You've been through a lot, and Lex Luthor told me about this doctor who deals with people with posttraumatic stress disorder.
Whitney: Clark, if this is your way of trying to break me and Lana up, it's not gonna work. I know you've got a thing for her. You always have. It's one of Clark Kent's many secrets.
Clark: Whitney, this has nothing to do with Lana. You need help.
Whitney: What I need is for you to stay out of my life.
He pushes Clark with one hand and sends him off the porch and onto the grass. Whitney goes back inside. Clark uses his X-ray vision to look through the door. He sees Whitney's skeleton locking the door and walking away. The skeleton is oddly shaped and glowing green.
CUT TO Whitney coming back into the kitchen where Mrs. Fordman is whimpering. Whitney morphs into Tina Grier from the episode X-Ray.
Tina: (Looking at Mrs. Fordman) Shut up!
Act 2 Scene 4
Clark enters the Talon where Pete and Chloe are working. Day.
Clark: Hey.
Pete: Clark, what's going on?
Clark: I know this may sound crazy, but Whitney may not be Whitney.
Chloe: Are you getting existential on us, or is this Wall of Weird material?
Clark: I think he's Tina Grier.
Chloe: The mighty morphing power girl?
Pete: What?
Clark: The girl who was Lex and then Lana and then locked up.
Pete: I know who she is, but it's impossible.
Clark: Why? She was obsessed with Lana, remember? Maybe she escaped from the hospital to see her again. Who better to impersonate than Whitney?
Chloe: Clark, there's no way that she could have pulled a Martin Guerre.
Clark: Why not?
Chloe: Cause she's dead.
Clark: What?
Chloe: She committed suicide last week. I'm running a story on it on page 2.
Clark: What happened?
Chloe: The authorities said that she went into the art therapy room in the psychiatric hospital, doused herself in paint thinner, and lit a match.
Pete: Okay, now that's nasty.
Chloe: I know. Tina wrote a note saying that she just didn't know who she was anymore. She couldn't take it.
Clark: (After a pause) Did they ID her dental records?
CUT TO Clark and Pete walking through the hall after class.
Clark: There's something else about Tina. I think she may know about my abilities.
Pete: You think?
Clark: Well, I had to use them to stop her. Once she was declared insane, I figured I didn't have to worry.
Pete: Well, you gotta worry now. What about the meteor rocks? Does she know?
Clark: Yeah, she used Lana's necklace against me.
Pete: You better be careful, man.
Clark: I'm gonna go find Tina. You warn Lana.
Lana walks out of a classroom.
Lana: Warn me about what?
Clark: Lana, this may be hard for you to understand, but... we may think that Whitney's actually Tina Grier.
Lana: Why would you say that?
Clark: You just have to believe me.
Lana: This is just insane.
Clark: I know it's a lot to process, but it's true. I'm going to the Fordmans'. You stay here with Pete till I get back. (Clark leaves)
Lana: (To Pete as she walks away) I need some time alone.
Pete: I understand, Lana, but that freak is dangerous.
Lana: (Stopping in her tracks) I know.
She turns around kicks Pete in the face, then in the stomach sending him flying down the hall. She goes to him and lifts him up against the lockers, holding him by his shirt.
Pete: You're Tina.
She throws him across the hall against the other row of lockers where he hits his head and gets knocked unconscious.
Lana: Who you calling a freak?
She walks away.
Act 2 Scene 5
Clark rings the doorbell at the Fordmans'. Day.
Clark: Mrs. Fordman? (He knocks on the door. When he doesn't get an answer, he pokes the lock out with his finger and enters) Mrs. Fordman? (He finds her tied to the chair. He takes the tape off her mouth) Are you okay? Where's Whitney?
Mrs. Fordman: (Crying) I don't know. Whoever it is, it is not my son. That girl, she's some kind of monster.
Clark: Okay. (He helps her up)
Act 2 Scene 6
Whitney enters the Talon where Lana is working. Day.
Whitney: Lana. We have to talk. (He takes her to a table)
Lana: Uh, could you give me a second, it's kind of--
Whitney: It can't wait. Sit down. (They sit. Whitney pulls out a small box and opens it to reveal a ring) Will you marry me? I-I understood why you didn't want to move in together. Now it'll be legal, and we can elope. We can get out of Smallville.
Lana: Whitney, this-- this is crazy. You know, I'm still in high school.
Whitney: My mom was only 16 when she married my dad. This is her ring.
Lana: (Pause) I'm sorry. I can't accept it.
Lana stands up and Whitney follows her.
Whitney: Why not?
Lana: Whitney, that-- that video letter I sent you... There are some things that I said that-- that I can't keep from you anymore.
Whitney: Like what?
Lana: I said that I-- I told you I thought we should go our separate ways. I didn't want to say anything when you said you couldn't remember. You just-- you had been through so much and I didn't want to hurt you like that. I will always care about you, Whitney.
Whitney: But you care more about Clark.
Lana: This has nothing to do with Clark.
Whitney: Don't lie to me! Look me in the eye and tell me you don't have feelings for him.
Lana: I have to get back to work. (She walks back to the bar)
Whitney: It's okay. It's okay. One thing combat taught me is how to, uh, deal with loss and move on.
Lana: I'm sorry.
Whitney: If I could just ask you for one thing...
Lana: Of course.
Whitney: Your necklace. Do you think I could have it? I-- just as something to remember you by. I know it means a lot to you.
Lana: It does. (She reaches behind her neck to unclasp the necklace) That's why I want you to have it.
She gives it to him and he smiles as he closes his hand over it.
Act 2 Scene 7
Clark enters the loft where Jonathan is working on the tractor. Night.
Clark: Hey, Dad.
Jonathan: Oh, hi, Clark. Say, how's Mrs. Fordman doing?
Clark: They need to keep her overnight. She's pretty freaked out by this whole thing.
Jonathan: Who could blame her, right? Oh, uh, any idea where Tina is now?
Clark: No. She could be anyone.
Jonathan: Yeah. (Out of Clark's sight, Jonathan holds up the glowing meteor necklace) You're right about that.
He turns toward Clark.
Fade to black.
Act 3 Scene 1
The door to the storm cellar opens and Clark is kicked down the stairs. Night. Tina comes down the stairs after him wearing Jonathan's clothes.
Tina: I always wondered how you beat me, Clark. Should be dead, but you're not. The meteor shower must have done something to you too.
We see the meteor necklace around Clark's neck as he groans.
Tina: Looks painful. (She grabs a rope)
Clark: Tina, don't do this.
Tina: (She kneels down to tie his arms behind his back) If I want to be with Lana, I don't have a choice.
Clark: Last year, you tried to kill her.
Tina: Yeah. It was the worst mistake of my life. She rejected me and I acted without thinking. But I love her, and I'll do anything to be with her. I finally figured out who Lana wants to be with.
Tina walks behind a shelf and when she comes out the other side, she has taken on Clark's form.
Clark #2: It's gonna be easy to become you, Clark.
Clark: (Strained) No! Stay away from her!
Clark #2: You have the perfect life. Great parents, good friends, and most importantly, the girl of our dreams waiting for you to finally make a move.
Clark #2 leaves, slamming the door behind him.
Clark: No!
Act 3 Scene 2
Lex enters the Talon where Helen is seated at the bar. Night.
Lex: I'm not used to people ignoring my calls.
Helen: I have to get to work.
Lex: Look, you can at least offer me some kind of explanation.
Helen: Your father did approach me, Lex. He did offer me money, but not to spy on you.
Lex: Then what did he want?
Helen: He wanted me to dump you. Even after I told him to go to hell, he wired the money anyway. So I guess he succeeded in exactly what he set out to do. Break us up.
Lex: You're telling me my father offered you $100,000 against your will? Why would he do that?
Helen: I can't even begin to fathom the depths of the Luthor family pathology.
Lex: You could have been honest. You could have told me.
Helen: I was about to. But before I could say a word, I realized I was in the middle of an interrogation. (She starts to walk away.)
Lex: Helen... if I had known--
Helen: No, no, no, no. I'm glad that this happened. It showed me who I was really dealing with. You know, I-I've done some pretty stupid things in my life, but this could possibly win the Nobel Prize for stupidity. I fell for someone who never really existed. (She leaves)
Act 3 Scene 3
Clark continues to struggle on the floor of the storm cellar, his face bathed in green light. Night.
He is panting as the veins in his neck bulge. Behind him we see the ship, covered by a blue tarp. It starts to glow slightly. Clark doesn't notice and the glow stops, but lights up again. He turns onto his other side and sees it as the glow pulses a third time, even more brightly. It lights up once more and we hear a frequency coming from the ship getting higher and higher as the glow becomes so bright that Clark has to squint against it. There is a blast and the ship sends out white waves of energy causing the ground to shake and wind to blow. The meteor rock against Clark's neck begins to lose its green color until it is completely clear. The ship goes dark. Clark remains on the floor, but his pain is obviously gone.
Act 3 Scene 4
Tina is in Lana's bedroom. Night. She opens a drawer and pulls out a nightgown, holding it to her nose and taking a deep breath. She hears a door close in the hallway and looks up. Lana enters in a towel, drying her hair. She sees Chloe standing next to the dresser.
Lana: Hey.
Chloe: (Holding a pair of socks) Sorry, I-I hope you don't mind. I, um, I need-- I'm sock-deprived. All my clothes are stuck on spin.
Lana: Well, go ahead. I got to go to the Talon and close out. (She goes to her closet)
Chloe: I bumped into Whitney. He told me what happened.
Lana: (Honestly concerned) Is he okay?
Chloe: Well, he said you're not an easy girl to get over, but he knows you'll be happy with Clark.
Lana: I told him this has nothing to do with Clark.
Chloe: Come on, Lana. It's obvious you two belong together.
Lana: Okay. Now you're starting act strange.
Chloe: Why?
Lana: Well, given your past history with Clark, I'm surprised you're so eager to play matchmaker.
Chloe doesn't answer, but looks Lana up and down. Lana turns back to the closet.
Chloe: Don't think it's easy for me, Lana. I just don't want to stand in the way of what's meant to be. (She walks up right behind Lana, smelling her hair. She puts her hand on Lana's shoulder. Lana turns around, startled) Sorry.
Chloe smiles and Lana turns back to the closet, confused.
Act 3 Scene 5
Jonathan bursts into the storm cellar with a flashlight. Night.
Jonathan: Clark? (To Martha) He's down here! Clark! (He helps Clark to his feet) Are you all right? What happened?
Clark: The ship saved me.
Jonathan: How'd it do that?
Clark: I don't know, but look what it did to the necklace. (Jonathan holds up the flashlight and shines it on the clear rock) Oh, my God. I have to save Lana.
Jonathan: What-- Clark...
Clark runs up the stairs and we hear a whoosh as he super speeds away. Jonathan shines his light at the ship where the tarp is still smoking.
Act 3 Scene 6
Lana is cleaning the tables after hours at the Talon. Night. She puts some dishes on the bar and when she turns around, Clark #2 is there, smiling.
Lana: (Startled) Hey.
Clark #2: Sorry, did I scare you?
Lana: No, I just-- I wasn't expecting to see anyone this late. (She goes to pick up some more dishes)
Clark #2: Hey, Lana, there's something I should tell you. When I saw you with Whitney I realized that if I didn't act on my true feelings, I could lose you forever.
Lana: Did someone put something in the Smallville water supply, cause everyone's acting really strange today.
Clark #2: I'm acting the way I should've acted the first time I met you. Lana, I love you. (He leans and kisses her passionately)
Lana: Clark...
She responds to the kiss at first, then tries to push him away, but he keeps trying to kiss her. The real Clark enters in the background. Lana looks back and forth at both of them, shocked.
Fade to black.
Act 4 Scene 1
Lana and both Clarks in the Talon. Night.
Clark: Get away from her!
Lana: (To Clark #2) What's going on?
Clark #2: Nothing. I'll explain everything when I get you away from Tina.
Lana: Tina?
Clark: (Pointing to Clark #2) No, Lana, that's Tina! Lana, it's me, Clark.
Clark #2: Don't listen to him. He's lying.
Clark: (Coming closer) The guy who fixed the leaky drainpipe?
Lana looks at Clark and tries to get away from Clark #2. He holds her where she is.
Clark #2: No. We're supposed to be together.
Lana: Stay away from me, you freak!
Clark #2: No!
Clark #2 punches her in the face and she is thrown against the wall.
Clark super speeds to Clark #2 and slams him against the wall.
Clark #2: You ruin everything!
Clark #2 slams him against a set of double doors and they both fall out of the building, landing in the alley outside, Clark #2 on top of Clark. Clark head butts him, sending him back against some trash cans. Clark gets to his feet and so does Clark #2. They face off, slowly circling each other.
Clark #2: I'm gonna kick your ass, Kent!
Clark: (Calmly) Bring it on.
Clark #2 bends over, ready to charge, and Clark steels himself. Clark #2 runs at him, head first into his stomach, ramming him into the wall at the other side of the alley. He bashes Clark against the wall a few times, then Clark turns around, bashing Clark #2 into the wall. Clark #2 grabs a pipe sticking out of the ground and pushes Clark away. He hits Clark with the pipe and Clark goes flying backwards into a nearby greenhouse, shattering the glass.
He is trying to get up when Clark #2 comes in after him and raises the pipe over his head. Before he can strike, Clark kicks him in the chest and he is thrown out of the greenhouse and onto the street. Clark comes out, holding the pipe.
Clark: Tina! Listen to me! (He drops the pipe) You don't have to do this. You can stop. I can help you.
Clark #2 is standing next to a parked truck with a large generator in the back. He grabs the generator and holds it over his head.
Clark #2: Why don't you just die?!
He runs at Clark, but Clark super speeds out of the way. Clark #2 keeps running toward the point of a jagged broken window frame sticking out of the greenhouse, too quickly to realize what is going on. He stops short when he is impaled and drops the generator. The frame has gone all the way through his chest and is coming out of his back, dripping with blood.
Clark: Tina...
Clark #2 morphs back into Tina.
Tina: (Weakly) Take care of... Lana.
She gasps a few times and then dies.
Act 4 Scene 2
Martha is watering some flowers in the kitchen as Jonathan and Clark enter. Day.
Martha: How is Mrs. Fordman?
Jonathan: (Slowly) Uh... The military officer that Tina murdered was coming to tell Mrs. Fordman that they had found Whitney's body. Whitney died in combat, sweetie.
Martha: Oh, my God. (Jonathan hugs her) Oh, that's horrible.
Jonathan: Yeah.
Martha: Clark? Have you seen Lana?
Clark: Chloe said she's not ready to see anyone yet.
Martha: Sweetheart, are-- are you all right?
Clark: I just can't help thinking that... Whitney's skin wasn't bulletproof. His bones weren't unbreakable, but he still put himself in harm's way so the world could be safer. I wonder if I didn't have my abilities if I'd have that same kind of courage.
Jonathan: (He puts his hand on Clark's shoulder) Son, there is no doubt in our minds that you would.
Clark puts his hand on top of Jonathan's.
Act 4 Scene 3
Lex is standing in the hallway of the hospital. Day. Helen is talking to another doctor. When the doctor walks away, Lex goes to Helen.
Helen: Lex.
Lex: What I did was inexcusable. I violated your privacy. I should have trusted you.
Helen: It's a little late for apologies.
Helen starts to walk away and Lex follows.
Lex: From the time I was born, I was raised in an environment of suspicion and distrust. My father taught me to regard everyone as an adversary no matter who they are.
Helen: (She stops) I'm really sorry you had to grow up like that, Lex, I am. (She turns away again)
Lex: When my mother died, I began to build a wall around my heart. Every year that wall grew taller and more fortified until eventually it became impenetrable. I want to tear the wall down, Helen, I do. I just-- I don't have the slightest clue how to do it.
Helen: (Turning around as she takes a deep breath) Lex...
Lex: I never once asked anyone for help, but I'm asking you now. Help me, Helen. I don't want to become my father.
Helen walks to him and takes his hand. They walk away together slowly.
Act 4 Scene 4
Clark is in the underground caves. Night. He is holding up the clear meteor necklace and looking at the wall paintings with his flashlight. He turns around and puts the necklace in his pocket as Lana comes around the corner.
Clark: Lana.
Lana: Um, I called your house. Your mom said you were down here.
Clark: I am so sorry.
Lana: (Crying) I never should have sent that video.
Clark: Don't do that to yourself.
Lana: He was missing in action, fighting for his life thinking that I wasn't there, that I didn't care.
Clark: It's not your fault.
Lana: (She walks past him) It seems like every person that I've ever gotten close to just leaves.
Clark: That's not true.
Lana: Yeah, it is. My parents, Nell, now Whitney. I know I haven't been a good friend. (She turns to face him)
Clark: You've been a great friend.
Lana: No, I have doubted you, accused you of things, and still you're here protecting me. I don't care if you have secrets, Clark. You are the one good, constant thing in my life and I don't want to lose you too.
Clark: (Taking her into his arms) I'm not going anywhere.
She cries against his chest and they stay there, holding each other.
Fade to black.
