ABC:
ABC's 2003 Pilot Season Wed, Mar 19, 2003 12:52 PM PDT
by Daniel Fienberg Zap2it
Having already renewed a sizeable percentage of its most solid comedy performers, ABC is looking for a few more sitcoms to build on returning shows like "Life With Bonnie" and "8 Simple Rules." However, of the dozen comedy pilots on order, the network will only have room for a handful. Among the ordered pilots, ABC hopes to build on established relationships with "Home Improvement" star Tim Allen, who will produce and narrate "These Guys," and "Spin City" star Michael J. Fox, who will produce the Craig Bierko-led sitcom "Hench at Home." The network also has two highly anticipated comedies on tap for possible midseason additions with Steve Martin's "Mr. and Mr. Nash," starring Alan Cumming and Janeane Garofalo in "Slice O' Life."
Desperate for new drama hits, ABC will start their slate with established properties. The federal marshal drama "Karen Sisco" builds on characters who were already successful in Elmore Leonard's novel "Out of Sight" and Steven Soderbergh's film of the same name, which starred Jennifer Lopez and George Clooney. ABC will try to cash in on the John Grisham name, turning his novel, "The Street Lawyer" into a weekly series (an idea CBS tried in 1995 with "The Client" ). The network is also taking part in the year's largest trend in dramas, with the Homeland Security-based "Threat Matrix" and the FBI-centric "Lines of Duty," which already has a 13-episode pick-up.

FOX:
FOX's 2003 Pilot Season Wed, Mar 19, 2003 12:55 PM PDT
by Rick Porter Zap2it
FOX's ratings health this season is somewhat deceptive -- big numbers among the all-important adults 18-49 demographic have been driven largely by two unscripted shows -- "Joe Millionaire" and "American Idol" -- that didn't premiere until January, and there's no telling when their stars might flame out. Consequently, the network is as busy as any of its counterparts in drama and comedy development, ordering nearly two dozen pilots.
The comedies are a mix of family shows and ensemble projects centering on young adults. The drama side may be more important, however. Of FOX's current slate of four dramas, only "24" is assured of returning next season, although "Boston Public" will likely be renewed as well. The dramas run the gamut from family-centered shows to a cop show set in Hawaii. Another cop show, "NYPD 2069," is set over 60 years in the future and has already been given a series commitment, largely based on creator Steven Bochco's sterling reputation.

UPN:
UPN's 2003 Pilot Season Wed, Mar 19, 2003 12:56 PM PDT
by Rick Porter Zap2it
UPN wasn't very aggressive in its development of new shows last spring, and it's been paying the price for that decision this season. When the network's new drama "Haunted" failed after only a few weeks, the net had to scramble to find a replacement for it, and the comedy "Abby" isn't exactly an ideal companion for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
The No. 6 network is being more active this time around, ordering a dozen pilots and making an effort to sign up strong talent behind the camera (e.g., Will Smith, Wes Craven, the Carsey-Werner-Mandabach team). The shows have disparate themes, but they focus on UPN's mission of becoming a destination for young adults.
One wild card is a possible "Buffy" spinoff, long rumored to be in the works. UPN is keeping mum about details, which is why it's not listed below.

WB:
The WB's 2003 Pilot Season Thu, Mar 20, 2003 05:55 PM PDT
by Daniel Fienberg Zap2it
In an effort to further break into the sitcom arena (following the relative success of "Reba" and the transplanted "Grounded for Life"), The WB has ordered 13 comedy pilots for the fall, including a number of family comedies. Some of the new laffers follow familiar formulas, like a remake of "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" (from the producers of last fall's retred of "Family Affair"). Others, like the futuristic "The Spaces" from "Greg the Bunny" producer Dan Milano, seem to have some potential for adventurous spunk. Throw in a few familiar faces like Delta Burke ("Sweet Potato Queens" ), Anthony Anderson ("All About the Andersons" ) and an untitled effort from [not-so-Lil] Bow Wow and The WB should have a healthy variety of choices.
On the drama side, franchise shows are the order of the day, a return to the strategy that didn't quite work out for the network a year ago. This seasons big-ticket freshman dramas were either cancelled ("Birds of Prey"), never arrived in series form ("The Lone Ranger"), or didn't get picked up at all ("Lost in Oz" ). For September, The WB could turn to a modern "Tarzan," a younger-skewing take on "MacGyver" and a spin off of the popular "Gilmore Girls." However, on paper at least, the network's most interesting show may be "Chasing Alice," which mixes the conventions of the police procedural and missing persons drama with a structure borrowed from Lewis Carroll.
All About the Andersons (Comedy) Studio: Warner Bros. TV Production Team: Marco Pennette ("Regular Joe"), James Widdoes ("The Fighting Fitzgeralds" ), Anthony Anderson, Adam Glass Premise: A struggling actor with a young son moves back in with his parents. Are We There Yet? Stars: John Higgins ("Ally McBeal"), Maggie Welsh, Dan Byrd, Abigail Spencer, Kenan Thompson, Denise Quon Status: Pilot order
Chasing Alice (Drama) Studio: Warner Bros. Stars: Theresa Russell ("Glory Days"), Shemar Moore ("Birds of Prey"), Sophia Winkleman, Ivana Milicevic ("Mind of the Married Man" ), Greg Serano, Al Sapienza, Blanc and Zack Ward Status: Pilot order

CBS:
EMAIL THIS STORY CBS' 2003 Pilot Season Wed, Mar 19, 2003 12:54 PM PDT
by Rick Porter Zap2it
CBS has a lot fewer needs than several of the other networks. Its biggest hits show no sign of going away anytime soon, and its lineup has been quite stable for the past couple of seasons. Among the needs it does have are shows to shore up the 10 p.m. timeslot, particularly on Wednesday and Friday nights, and finding a Saturday anchor to replace the departing "Touched by an Angel."
The slate of pilots seem to stick to what CBS does best -- family-oriented comedies and dramas focused on solving crime. So far, a spinoff of "JAG" about the Navy's criminal investigators looks like the surest bet to make the fall schedule.

NBC's 2003 Pilot Season Thu, Mar 20, 2003 07:06 PM PDT
by Daniel Fienberg Zap2it
NBC's comedy strategy for the fall seems to be simple: Get a big star, give them a sitcom, and desperately hope the material can be properly tailored to their strengths. The Peacock network is gambling on Whoopi Goldberg, Howie Mandel, "SNL" regular Tracey Morgan, Rupert Everett, Tom Selleck, Heather Locklear and Alicia Silverstone, who are all toplining pilots that sound more like triumphs of star-power rather than concept. All of the actors have proven adept at elevating their material, but as anybody who has seen "Bogus," "Inspector Gadget," "The Closer" or "Excess Baggage" knows, they are anything but sure things. Reliable veterans John Larroquette, Christine Baranski, Fred Willard, Hal Linden and Shirley Jones will also rub shoulders with a few newcomers, like Tom Papa.
On the drama side, NBC has ordered fewer pilots, but big names still abound. Rob Lowe moves from the White House to an exclusive law firm in "Lyon's Den," James Caan makes a rare stab at series television with an untitled drama set in Las Vegas, and testosterone will be in full effect with aging alpha males Tom Skerritt and Scott Glenn fighting for "Homeland Security."
