'THE O.C.' AIRING AUG. 26 ON FOX
Ryan becomes a member of the Cohen family when Kirsten and Sandy decide to take full, legal responsibility for him. At rehearsal for an upcoming Cotillion, Marissa sets Ryan up to escort Anna, and Summer is regretfully partnered with Seth.
When the dancing stops, the drinking begins and all of the kids gather for a pre-Cotillion fiesta on the beach. As in a previous episode, Seth and Ryan arrive to an unwelcoming crowd and problems arise when Luke eyes Marissa and Ryan together, but Ryan resists the desire to fight.
Meanwhile, Sandy is approached by the SEC who explains that Jimmy is the subject of a fraud investigation and Kirsten's $100,000 loan to him has placed the Cohen family in the spotlight as well.
At the Cotillion, Sandy's, Jimmy's, and Ryan's tempers are all put to the test in the "The Debut" episode.

INT. BALLROOM-BACKSTAGE-GIRLS' PREP ROOM
Ryan stands watching as Julie and Marissa are engaged in conversation. He doesn't notice Anna approach behind him.
ANNA: Hey. Look who decided to show up.
RYAN: Yeah. Sorry. I was gonna call.
ANNA: Don't worry. Your hit man already took care of it. Didn't feel a thing.
RYAN: I'm here now if you want to--
ANNA: Nope. Too late. Missed your shot.
Ryan looks at Anna surprised. Anna nods toward Marissa.
ANNA: (CONT'D)
I guess you'll have to take Princess Mononoke over there.
A beat. They share a smile.
RYAN: What are you gonna do?
ANNA: Oh, so, now you care?
(then, smiles)
Go.
ON JULIE AND MARISSA--
JULIE: Oh, Mariss. If you had just stuck to the original plan.
(off Marissa's look)
I'm sorry, sweetie You want me to have Daddy go find him?
MARISSA: No Mom--
JULIE: Well, you can't make your debut without a escort.
From behind her, Marissa hears...
RYAN'S VOICE: I hear there's a White Knight available.
Marissa and Julie turn to see Ryan standing there.
JULIE: (uncomfortable)
It's nice of you to offer, but I don't think that's appropriate.
Marissa smiles at Ryan, stands up.
MARRISA: I'll get dressed.
OFF JULIE-- Not pleased, as Marissa and Ryan walk away...
EXT. BALLROOM-DECK--DAY
Seth leans against the rail, staring sadly at the ocean.
ANNA'S VOICE: Could you be any more pathetic?
Seth turns to see Anna there.
ANNA: Lone figure staring out at the water, wondering if you're gonna be lonely for the rest of your life...
SETH: Oh, hey. Your sensitivity is really-- non-existent.
ANNA: You know what your problem is? You're not a man.
SETH: Again, not appreciating the brutal honesty.
ANNA: You know what girls find sexy?
SETH: Dudes who play water polo?
ANNA: (considers this)
You know waht else? Confidence. Watch this.
SETH: Watch what?
ANNA: (coming in close)
Hey, Seth, I don't have a date for Cotillion Want to be my escort?
SETH: (suddenly flustered)
Um--er--
ANNA: (nose to nose)
Confidence, Cohen.
SETH: (a beat, smiles)
Let's do this.
Seth busts a mini-move, and away they go.

Marissa and Summer are in a dressing room. Summer is topless (again) holding up a dress in front of the mirror. Marissa is sitting in a chair next to it.
Marissa: Wait I thought you said he was a total psycho?
Summer: Well that was before I got to know him.
Marissa: Wait when did you get to know him?
Summer: Just now.
Voice over: Marissa, deals with a conniving rival.
Fade out
Summer: Plus then there is that whole brooding bad boy thing... he's wounded, I can save him.
Marissa: I mean, have you ever really talked to him though, cause he's not a bad boy.

This is the party where Luke gets shot
The Outsider episode tidbit...INT. COHEN POOL HOUSE--DAY
Seth paces as Ryan makes his bed, preparing to leave for the day.
SETH: So, this is good. You're starting a new job. Which will give me plenty of time to do all the things I haven't had time to do since you got here. Like--start my novel.
RYAN: Seth. I'll be back by six.
SETH: Right. And it's nine now. So, that leaves me nine hours of "me" time to, like...learn Chinese. Or...study the Talmud.
RYAN: Are you gonna be okay?
SETH: Yeah. Dude. Before you got here, all I did was hang out by myself. It's a return to form really.
(then)
Need a ride?

EXT. LONG BEACH PARTY HOUSE--NIGHT
The party is raging. Small back yard, cramped, crowded. (Swimming pool filled with kids?)
Ryan stands outside, watching Seth inside, sitting at the kitchen table, surrounded by DONNIE'S BOYS, including RUSH (tattooed, early-20's). PLASTIC CUPS in front of them, BOTTLES on the table, and CARDS in all of their hands.
INT. LONG BEACH HOUSE PARTY--KITCHEN--CONTINUOUS
Seth throws down his cards.
SETH: Straight flush. Looks like I'm still the President. And my executive order is: drink.
Everybody GROANS, throws down their SHOTS. Seth smiles, triumphant.
RUSH: So, how do you know Ryan, anyway?
You go to Chino Hills, too?
SETH: (a beat, considers)
--Yes. Chino Hills. We have a great...team. All of our teams are great.
Seth starts dealing cards again.
*******
As Seth continues bluffing his way through the poker game--
SETH: So, Ryan's quarterbacking, and I'm deep in the end zone. He throws a perfect spiral-- and I break free of a defender, and I'm like--
RUSH: Wait--we played Chino Hills. I don't remember playing you.
SETH: (covering coolly)
Yeah, I was on the D.L. for awhile. Rotator cuff.
(then, for good measure)
And I pulled a hammie.
OFF RUSH, impressed--
--Ryan swoops in next to him.
RYAN: Hey, Seth. What's up, guys?
(leaning in, to Seth)
We should go.
SETH: What? Why?
RYAN: It's getting late. I'm tired.
SETH: (protesting)
Dude--
Donnie arrives.

LUKE: Look. Dude. You best leave.
DONNIE: Or what? What are you gonna do?
(to his boys)
Yo, Rush. Check out the Abercrombie model.
Donnie makes a move on Luke. Luke backs up.
DONNIE: Don't worry, kid. I ain't gonna mess up your hair.
RYAN: Hey, Donnie. What's going on?
Everyone turns to see--
RYAN--making his way into the party. Marissa, in one of Ryan's sweatshirts and a pair of shorts, follows.
DONNIE: Ryan!
ON LUKE--seeing Marissa arrive with Ryan. Confused. And then his survival instincts kick in. He shoots a look at-- HOLLY. Letting her know. Keep her mouth shut. She gets it.
LUKE: (to Ryan)
I shoulda figured this guy was a friend of yours. Why don't you tell him to go back to the trailer park?
ON SETH-- moving quicky to intercept Ryan.
DONNIE: (to Ryan)
You want something to drink, kid? I'll find you a glass.
Donnie throws open the cupboard. Begins tossing GLASSES out. Shattering against the floor.
LUKE: Alright. You're done. Let's go.
Luke goes to step to Donnie. Donnie spins on him.
DONNIE: C'mon. Please. Hit me.
Ryan steps between them.
SETH: I think you scared 'em.
DONNIE: I ain't scared anybody yet.
And with that Donnie WHIPS out his gun. Everyone SCREAMS. People hit the floor.
Ryan steps back. Luke does, too. Seth steps in front of Summer. Instinctively protecting her.
LUKE: Whoa. Okay.
DONNIE: (gun aimed at Luke)
What's up now, bitch? Who's the tough guy, now? Huh?
RYAN: What are you doing?
DONNIE: (aims the gun at Luke)
How much you hate that punk, huh, Ryan? The way he talks to you? Like you're trash?
LUKE: (terrified)
Look. I'm sorry.
DONNIE: Whaddya think Rush?! Who else you hate at this party?

--BAM!
Suddenly the GUN GOES OFF--everyone SCREAMS. The gun hits the floor. Donnie pushes Ryan off of him.
DONNIE: What's your problem? I was just playing, playa.
And suddenly--Marissa is SCREAMING. Ryan turns to see--
LUKE--pale. BLOOD is pouring out his arm. In shock. He falls backwards.
ON DONNIE--eyes wide. What did he do?
DONNIE: We gotta go! Let's go!
Donnie, Rush, and his buddies SCRAMBLE. Donnie grabs the gun. As they take off--
DONNIE: Let's go, Ryan!
(to Seth) C'mon!
But Ryan isn't going anywhere. Neither is Seth. As Donnei turns to bolt...
DONNIE: (to the fallen Luke)
I didn't mean to shoot you! It was an accident! Alright?
Ryan runs to Luke's aid. Grabs a dish towel.
MARISSA: Call an ambulance! Somebody!
Ryan presses the towel on Luke's arm. Luke passing out...
RYAN: You're gonna be okay. You're gonna be okay.
As Ryan and Marissa lock eyes... And then Ryan looks up at Seth. Who watches. Stricken.

Tidbits
Kirsten is really fussing with the kitchen. Double-checking everything...
SANDY: Look at you. You're wired. Seeing your parents is supposed to make you feel guilty. Not...terror.
CALEB on't forget. I'm also her boss.
Kirsten nearly jumps out of her skin. Sandy looks up to see--
CALEB NICHOL, late 50s, enters. He's handsome, fit. If he's a ruthless shark, you wouldn't know on first glance.
KIRSTEN: Dad!
CALEB: Speak of the devil, and the devil he does appear.
(beat)
Shalom, Sandy.
As he goes to hug Kirsten--
KIRSTEN: You're early.
CALEB: The leer got me here faster than expected. I used my key to get in.
SANDY: So, Caleb. Where's the new girlfriend?
CALEB: Taking a swim.
(beat)
Where's my grandson?
EXT. COHEN HOUSE- DRIVEWAY-
Seth and Ryan stand by the car. Ryan holds a big bag of mesquite chips.
RYAN: So your Grandpa? He's like, the most powerful man in Newport?
SETH: And much like yourself--he comes from humble beginnings. I believe you guys are gonna hit it off.
RYAN: I burned down one of his homes.
SETH: He has like a million of 'em. I'm sure it's not even on his radar.
(beat)
Do not worry, dude. He's totally cool.
CALEB: Seth!
Caleb comes out the front door. Seth beams. As Grandpa gives Seth a big hug--
CALEB: Still not a football player.
SETH: No. But thanks.
(beat)
Grandpa. This is Ryan.
Ryan smiles. Extends his hand. Grandpa eyes him. Coolly.
CALEB: So, you're the kid who burned down my house.
Seth and Ryan share a look. Caleb throws an arm around Seth.
CALEB: I gotta show you my pictures from Spain. Promise me you'll go to Barcelona while you're young.
(to Ryan, re: mesquite chips)
Put those out back by the grill.
Caleb leads Seth inside. Seth shoots one last "it'll be fine" look back at Ryan. But...
OFF RYAN--he already can tell... It won't be...
EXT. COHEN HOUSE- BACKYARD-MOMENTS LATER
Ryan comes around the back of the house. On his way to the grill when he sees--emerging out of the pool-
GABRIELLE, 25--stunning. In a string bikini. Soaking wet.
Ryan freezes in his tracks. Holy ****...
GABRIELLE: Hi.
RYAN: Hey.
Gabby follows Ryan's gaze to her breasts. Ryan looks away, Gabby smiles.
GABBY: I'm Gabrielle. I'm with Caleb.
As she walks off to her towel-- Seth comes outside. Arrives next to Ryan. Both watching Gabby dry off and wrap the towel around her taking her top off underneath the towel and flinging it to the chair.
SETH: Omigod. That could be my new grandma...

RYAN: Not when she looks like that.
Caleb comes outside. Standing in the doorway.
CALEB: Hey, Gabrielle. We were gonna sit. Have some wine and cheese. Catch up.
GABBY: Oh. Okay. You want me to--
CALEB: Hang out in the sun. Get some color.
(glares at Ryan)
Caleb exits. Gabby gives the boys a wry smirk. If she's feeling belittled, she doesn't show it. Swims over.
GABBY: Can I join you guys?
The guys, too excitedly, mutter "sure." "of course"...She slides in between them. As she shakes out her hair...
Ryan and Seth exchange another look. The hot tub just got hotter...
GABBY: (enjoying the attention)
So. What's up?
Another round of incoherent, babble, adolescent, fear-induced squeeks.
GABBY: This party for Caleb--it's like a who's who of Newport?
That should be wild, huh?
(beat, off their silence)
I was being sarcastic.
SETH: We don't get a lot of that here.
GABBY: Now, you're two hot young guys--
Seth shoots Ryan a look. We are?
GABBY: Who you bringing to this party? Any girls you want to invite?
SETH: Nah. I like the party to come to me.
(off Gabby too intimidating look)
Her name is Summer.
GABBY: And, did you invite her yet?
SETH: Well. I mean. I had like, a plan--
(again, off Gabby look)
No.
GABBY: You can't expect anything to happen unless you put yourself out there. She can't say yes if you don't ask her.
SETH: That's true... Interesting...
(beat)
Ryan00 did you ask Marissa?
RYAN: I haven't talked to her in a few days. I don't think she'll want to go.
GABBY: And why not?
RYAN: She's kinda got tis boyfriend...I think they're back together.
They've been going out since fifth grade.
GABBY: Fifth grade? She needs to change it up. She's known that guy since he was eating paste.
SETH: I think he still does...
OFF RYAN, considering...
