Episode 7 "The New Beginning"

Kirsten takes Ryan to enroll in Pacific Heights Private School.

Marissa is on the verg of a breakdown.

Seth and Summer enlist Ryan's help to save her.

INT. PACIFIC HARBOR HIGH - DR. KIM'S OFFICE - DAY

>>Kirsten and Ryan sit across from Dr. Kim. Her office filled with books. Classical music plays. Nice Persian rug on the floor. Intimidating academia.<<

Kirsten: I don't understand.

Dr. Kim: Well. It seems Ryan's acceptance may have been...premature.

Kirsten: Yes. But when we first contacted you, you didn't anticipate any problems.

>>Dr. Kim looks at Ryan for a beat, trying to figure out the best way to say this...<<

Dr. Kim: That was before we learned a little more about Ryan's...history.

>>Ryan tenses...Looks to Kirsten...Who locks in on Dr. Kim.<<

Dr. Kim (cont'd): Weak grades. Truancy. A notation regarding some criminal activity.

Kirsten: It was a misdemeanor. Probation. And his test scores? Ninety-eighth percentile on his S.A.T.'s?

Dr. Kim: There's no doubt Mr. Atwood has extraordinary promise. I'm just concerned he hasn't had adequate preparation for the...rigors of our curriculum.

Kirsten: And I'm concerned you're only worried about the pressure you'll face from other parent who might not want Ryan here.

>>Ryan is starting to feel uncomfortable...<<

Dr Kim: I'm not going to pretend that it's not a condiseration. We have very involved, very sensitive parents, who are extremely protective of the reputation of this school.

Kirsten: Well. I'm sure I could take care of all this by offering to build another wing on the library.

Dr. Kim: Kirsten. That's uncalled for. This is about Ryan's future.

Kirsten: Which you are threatening because he comes from a public school system that's unequipped to challenge a bright student.

>>It's getting testy between these two women. Ryan clears his throat.<<

Ryan: Sorry. I can't help but notice that you guys are talking about me and I'm sitty right here. (beat) But I was reading the pamphlet you guys sent on the school? And how it talks about how Pacific Harbor students are asked to exceed their grasp. To fail in order to succeed. To reach further than they are capable, to truly learn their own potential. (beat) Well. The way I see it? I'm the model student because I'm nothing but potential.

>>Ryan flashes a smile. Kirsten suppresses one. Dr. Kim, impressed, soldiers on.<<

Dr. Kim: Ryan you realize if you did fail -- you could lose a year. Not to mention confidence. Hope.

Ryan: With all due respect, Dr. Kim? If you think not letting me in is gonna help my hope and confidence...(beat, sly confidence) Give me a shot.

>>(pause) Dr. Kim finds his brashness undeniable.

Dr. Kim: If you'll consent to a placement exam?

Ryan: Just tell me where and when.

Dr Kim: And if you fail?

Ryan: I don't go to your school.

Dr. Kim: Is tomorrow morning okay? (Ryan nods) Let me make the arrangements.

>>As Dr. Kim walks to her phone to make the call -- Kirsten leans in to Ryan.<<

Kirsten: I've never heard you talk so much in my life.

Ryan: I like to save it for when it counts.

INT. PACIFIC HARBOR HIGH - HALLWAY - DAY

>>Seth flips through a textbook. Sitting on the floor by the lockers. Looks up to see Summer, carrying books, coming down the hall.<<

Seth: Summer. Hey.

Summer: Hi. (beat) It is so weird being in school right now. Surrounded by all these people who have like no idea...

Seth: I know. Did you talk to Marissa?

Summer: I spoke to her mom. You?

Seth: Went by this morning. She was sleeping. But she's gonna be okay.

>>He looks up. Sees -- Ryans P.O.V. --- Through door window --- Dr. Kim in the administration office, talking to a secretary. As Dr. Kim walks out of frame...Back on Ryan --- flipping through the test. Trying to find any question he might know the answer to. There are none. And then he hears a knock.<<

>>Ryan looks up as Summer and Setch poke their heads in.<<

Seth: Hey.

Ryan: What are you doing?

Seth: I know this isn't a good time, but Marissa needs us. You.

Ryan: What? Now?

Summer: A shrink's coming to take her to like a loony bin. In an hour.

Seth: We're breaking her out.

>>A moment. As Ryan absorbs this. And then looks up to see ---
Dr. Kim --- behind Setch and Summer.<<

Dr Kim: What is going on here?

>>Seth and SUmmer both now know they're busted. Turn slowly.<<

Seth: Hey! Dr. Kim.(beat) I know what this looks like. But there's kind of an emergency.

Dr. Kim: Out. Now.

>>Seth and Summer duck out of the room. Dr. Kim closes the door behind her. Stares at Ryan.<<

Dr. Kim: I could fail you just on the suspicion of cheating.

Ryan: I wasn't.

Dr. Kim: You said you were serious about wanting to take this test.

Ryan: And I am. It's just. (beat) This...emergency. It's important.

Dr. Kim: Right. And clearly this is not. Which is fine. Better we know this now, than a few weeks in when you're completely over your head. (beat) You shouldn't pursue something unless you truly want it.

Ryan: (gathering his stuff) That's what I'm doing.

Dr. Kim: You walk away from this test? You don't go to this school.

Ryan: I appreciate you giving me this chance. Sorry.

INT. HOAG HOSPITAL -- MARISSA'S ROOM -- DAY

>>Marissa sits up. Dr. Feldman, bearded, kindly, vaguely rabbinical. Sits across from her. Clipboard in hand. Reviewing some papers.<<

Dr. Feldman: So I see here you were treated for anorexia in the ninth grade.

Marissa: It was tennis season. I got really stressed. But...

>>Marissa shrugs. Dr. Feldman doesn't look convinced.<<

Dr. Feldman: And in the tenth grade you got caught shoplifting.

Marissa: It was just a lighter. And a pack of cigarettes.

Dr. Feldman: And do you still smoke?

Marissa: Not really.

Dr. Feldman: Drink? (off her look) Would you say you drink a lot?

Marissa: I was. I have. I mean -- everyone does.

Dr. Feldman: Have you ever had so much to drink that you blacked out?

>>Marissa doesn't answer. Dr. Feldman begins writing in the margins of his notebook.<<

Dr. Feldman: What about this last year? Your home life must be very traumatic right now. Your dad's legal troubles. Bankruptcy. parets divorcing. (beat) Probably home is the last place you want to be?

>>A beat. And then Marissa nods. Allowing this.<<

Dr. Feldman: You're a very bright student. Many extra-curricular activites. Chairwoman of the National Charity League. A real leader in the community. (beat) Your mother mentioned a boyfriend.

Marissa: Ryan's not my boyfriend.

Dr. Feldman: I was referring to a Luke Ward.

>>Marissa sits back in her bed. A beat.<<

Marissa: He's definitely not my boyfriend. Not anymore.

>>Dr. Feldman studies her.<<

Dr. Feldman: Would you like to share with me what happened?

Marissa: No.

Dr. Feldman: I'm not here to judge. I'm only here to listen and to help.

Marissa: Whatever I say -- you're just gonna use it against me. To prove that I'm...troubled.

Dr. Feldman: If your answers lead me to that diagnosis -- then you need my help.

>>This lands with her. A beat. Without emotion.<<

Marissa: I've been dating him since the fifth grade. We made this decision to sleep together...recently. (beat) And when I was down in Tijuana -- I saw him...Caught him...

>>She looks away. The rush of that humiliation returns.<<

Dr. Feldman: On the heels of your father telling you about the divorce? (Marissa nods) That's a lot to absorb. The pain, the betrayal, the sense of losing all stability. It must have been overwhelming.

>>Marissa just nods. Fighting back tears.<<

Dr. Feldman: Your mother is extremely concerned about your well-being right now. Talk to me about your relationship with her.

>>Marissa steels herself.<<

Marissa: How much time do you have?

Wow... Summer looks like she might have some good in her after all! My god is that possible?! Anyway, she's talking to Seth and seems to know his name... if he's happy, I'm happy.

Thanks for the spoilers.
