:fight I just got done watching the premier of the OC. Definitely the most original series to debute this summer. It was refreshing to see something that wasn't dubbed reality tv for once. Lately I've been sucked into the reality tv cult thanks to the efforts of Paradise Hotel, but the OC brought me back from the brink. I know it's been compared to the likes of 90210, but the OC seemed more adult to me. I mean when we were first introduced to Brandon and Brenda Walsh they seemed like gritty versions of the Brady Bunch siblings thrown together with a 90s edge. The OC inhabitants are hardly that proper. While watching the episode I thought it was brave of the producers to put a drink or a ciggarrette in the hands of several of the younger cast members and then to my surprise not lecture about the dangers of alcohol and smoking. They let it slide right by without making it a "movie of the week" moment. I think some shows get too preachy about these touchy topics and really take the fun out of it. The episode moved along really fast, which always works. Ryan had crashed the car, been arrested, thrown out of his house, taken in by Sandy and met Marissa all within the first 8 minutes. That was what was so great. Some shows have a tendency to drag this crap out, but the OC seemed like it had so much it wanted to do in the first episode and just didn't have the time. The one thing I didn't like was the opening song "California" or whatever. Somehow I'm betting it took the guy 2 seconds to think up that song. He just kept saying
Cal--i--for-nia...very lame. That aside, they definitely laid the groundwork well in the opening episode.Does anyone expect Kirstin (Sandy's wife) to mess around with Marissa's dad? Also I'm thinking Seth should seriously re-think liking Summer, cause she has bitch wrote all over her. When I saw her I was thinking to myself "why would Seth want her?" She's just very wrong for him. Although there is that "men want what they can't have" thing, which is probably why I should stop lusting after Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jennifer Garner :loveu Anyway I thought the friendship that's developing between Seth and Ryan was nice. It's kinda like they need each other to get by in the OC. Also what is Mrissa doing with big truck boy (he's big truck boy cause I forgot his name). I mean it's clear big truck boy wanted to screw around with big tit girl at the beach party thing. I like that they made a nemesis for Ryan.BTB (big truck boy) will keep him on his toes. The only problem with BTB being an ass is that it means Ryan and Marissa are probably gonna hook up early. There's just no sense of longing or dramatics to it. Kinda makes it a little dull. Of course I could be very wrong, it's hard to tell much from the first episode. Also the part at the end when he carried her into the pool house was beautiful. The part that pissed me off was that they didn't show her waking up. I thought that would have been a funny scene, but alas it wasn't ment to be.Can't wait for next week's ep:bat

I absolutely loved the pilot. It was definitely more mature adult oriented than I expected. Benjamin McKenzie did a fabulous job. He definitely is going to have a bright future ahead of him. I liked how it wasn't all weighted down with sex, alcohol, and immature teen angst we seem to keep seeing on these types of shows like 90210. It had depth to it and a story, not just some stupid plot that makes now sense. I throughly enjoyed it and am now completely hooked. I can't wait for the next episode!

I loved it. I will definitely be watching again next week. It was like 90210 with an edge.

Yes. There is definitely some kind of history between them. I'm curious as to what it is. Did they used to be a couple? Did they grow up together? It was only alluded to, and I hope that we get more info on their past in future episodes. I'm also interested to see more development in Marissa's dad's storyline. He is obviously in some kind of trouble, and I was a little confused over the bathroom scene, when he was in the stall crying. Looking forward to more of that.

Mr J, I also adored the scene where Ryan picks Marissa up and carries her into the poolhouse. I think it was my favorite of the whole episode.

BTB (whose name is Luke, btw) is an ass. He is definitely going to mean trouble for Ryan.

And how cute is Brian McKenzie! Oh my god! :thud Although, I do hope we will get to see him smile more in future episodes. I think I only saw him smile once the entire episode, but he had the cutest dimples! *sigh*

And Peter Gallagher. Man, I never realized how good-looking he is! Yum. I know Stalker agrees with me on that. ;)

Looking forward to next week. :)

:fight Ok, which one is Adam Brody? Also I thought BTB's name was Luke, but was unsure (and was too lazy to go all the way downstairs and re-watch his key parts in the episode). The thing that I didn't really care for was that about everyone either had a drink or a smoke in the ep.Usually they throw in at least one character that does neither, but it's not a major problem, just kinda surprised me. Anyway I was just checking for the ratings, anyone know how well it did? Also I can't believe Fox is playing the pilot a THIRD time on Monday before the new episode. They must think they really think they have something...and they do.I watched it again tonight, just for the hell of it, cause there wasn't much else on.I think it's obvious that Kirstin and Marrissa's dad (don't know the guy's name) are gonna have "stuff" go on between them. At the fashion show you could tell that she was all worried about him when he got up from the table and his wife could have cared less.Kirstin totally picked up on that.I really don't want her to go for him, cause 1) the man has some money problems and 2) she'd break Sandy's heart. I didn't think I'd particularly like Sandy, cause I'm not a huge fan of peter Gallegar (stop hitting me girls!), but he seemed very cool. I mean he's a Public Defender that surfs. He also had some great lines, a few which made me laugh out loud. One of them was when Ryan and him pulled up to the house and Ryan said "I didn't think lawyers made this kind of money?" and then Sandy said "Oh we don't...my WIFE does." That was so great his facial expression, the whole scene was flawless. He definitely grew on me a lot after that. On to Seth, he was freakin' great. Seth is gonna be my favorite definitely. He seems the most like me. I loved the scene when he first met Ryan and said "wanna play?" Cause that's how I've gotten to know a lot of the people I call friends today. I just really hope he forgets about Summer because she'll only break his heart. And it's not that she's too good for him, it's that he's too good for her. Damn can you tell I'm hooked?Ok moving on...did anyone else think that Marissa and Luke have kind of an open relationship thing? I mean it's not like they were hanging together much. And Luke clearly wanted to screw big tit girl, so I'm thinking he wouldn't be that heartbroken losing Marissa to Ryan (we all know it's bound to happen). It seemed like he more or less treated her like a trophy to show off or something. That's how I felt about it anyway. I guess we'll see sooner or later :bat

P.S. to all those interested. The O.C. scored a 7.5 (million), which are very good numbers. FOX said that it was pleased with it's performance and hopes to pick up more viewers during tonight's showing and Monday's re-airing of the pilot.Ok I'll stop editing this one to hell now.:silly

Adam Brody is Seth (he's also in Gilmore Girls, the guitar dude in the band who Lane is dating...). I liked the OC. Not too bad of a show... but I didn't watch it completely at the end because I started flipping between it and Scrubs. I loved Seth the best. He was funny and geeky, but still in his own way he was cool. I liked it when they entered the fashion show and he leaned over and told Ryan. 'Welcome to the dark side." I think he's seriously gotta get over Summer cuz she's nothing great. I'm not hooked on it or anything yet... I guess it's cuz it's been done before you know... boy from the wrong side of the tracks meets rich girl and they fall in love... but I'll still watch it. I figure maybe something different will happen.

:fight I think when you set out to do this type of show it gets hard to make every little thing original from every other show that existed. Yes, the OC does share a bit in common with 90210, but unlike the famous zip code it doesn't take itself seriously. In 90210's case it seemed like every other episode had a social underlying theme that had to do with the politics of the time. I don't see the OC following that path. They're just there to live for the moment and tomorrow be damned. I may be stretching a lot of this given that there's only been one episode. However, if the pilot was any indication, I wouldn't expect any heart felt conversations after a night of binge drinking, at which point the kids promise to never do it again and urge others to follow in their stead. The OC left that kinda crap in beverly Hills.:bat

Mr, J. I have to agree. As much as I loved 90210 and the fact that it did address alot of serious teenage/young-adult issues, I just want a show that kind of embraces them. That shows them for what they are...kid stuff...and moves on. Make sense?

:fight I think sometimes a show like this can get monotonous with the whole "kids did bad things, so kids must be punished somehow." And that's a very tired formula. I would like to think that the O.C. is a new breed of show that tosses caution to the wind and focuses on the fun without the POSSIBLE reprocautions that follow. I mean not everyone that drinks is gonna end up in a car accident. Not everyone that has unprotected sex is gonna end up pregnant. Although I'm kinda hoping Summer ends up with Herpes or something. It would be funny. I'm sick and twisted and need help...moving on. However, I think the O.C. will only be able to take the fun factor so far before actual consiquences star emerging. It's a well known fact that network TV tries to teach kids moral values on occasion that they figure their parents didn't have time to do apparently. Sometimes it works and is a resounding success and really effects people into making better choices, but most of the time it's just another hour of entertainment. I hope Fox just keps the O.C. simple. When you make it complex and over the top it gets to be camp. Melrose place became camp and it worked for a while. The problem with camp though is that all the bounderies are pushed and you have to keep outdoing your own successes. Ok I gotta stop talking about this, I feel like I should be a expert on Oprah. Ok on to the down and dirty, anyone expect Ryan and Marrissa to (at least) kiss in the upcoming pool scene or (at most) go all the way and do the dirty dirty?:bat

I do agree that this is a great show but i am originally a OC girl:silly i mean we party and all but it's so fake and it wasn't done in Newport or anywhere infact in Orange County and you know that Luke guy when he said "This how we do it in Orange County" when they beat up ryan and seth. i do know he wouldn't say that down here in Santa Ana (OC) he would get the crap kicked out of. To me the show is more of a LA kinda thing practically 90210. And you know what where are all the latinos and other nationalities that live in the OC. Don't get me wrong as i said i love the show but it can stand to be a little more real don't you agree.

:fight I do agree that it's all a little over dramatized. I remember reading an article that said actual inhabitants of the OC were pretty upset with the way it was portrayed on the show. I think anytime they place a show in a real place it's bound to appear different then it's true to life setting. Most TV shows drive home the dramtics which means making more of something that's usually not there. I never really figured that there was a party every other weekend and that coccain was always in attendance. If that were the case then you'd have a lot of junkies invading and taking up residence. But I totally see where you're coming from Carebear. I'm from a small town that thrives on peace and quiet, yet somehow if it ended up being the setting of a fictional tv show... it would end up a narcotics haven with prostitues in the street and murder in the market place. :bat
