]this description won't give any major spoilers away no more than what you find out in the first episode...
George was a very depressing young gal and her mother wakes her up one day and tells her she needs to get a job, the only "workish" clothes she had was a black outfit she wore to her grandma's funeral...well George takes off for work and she gets HIT IN THE HEAD BY A FLYING TOILET SEAT THAT CRASHED DOWN FROM A NASA SPACE SHUTTLE WHILE RE-ENTERING ORBIT!..she dies.
She is immediately met by a strange guy, but she is confused...is she alive..or is she dead...
short story version-those people who pass on with animosity towards something..some unfinished business, have to stay on earth as a grim reaper, they must collect a certain amount of souls (by brushing the body of something, taking their soul...and ultimately starting their death no reaper knows the amount they have to take)...the death scenes are amazingly funny...but then touching because the reapers job is to send them off to heaven and 'heaven' looks different to everyone..for example a gay couple, one guy died then his lover killed himself...their heaven looked like a beautiful field of flowers, the EFX are great.
there is a cast of many reapers who interact with George, from an ex prostitute turned witty reaper...to an ex con who "smuggled narcotics in his bum"
They meet daily and get little post it notes from "the reaper in charge"..."from death himself" as to where they have to be in order to take the soul of someone about to die.
but, they must also live a life, they do not look the same as they did in their "life" George for example..looks like an old hood rat to everyone else..but the show very nicely switches from what she looks like...to...what she REALLY looks like..it all just depends on what point of view you are seeing at the moment...she currently has a job with a woman named "Deloris" at "happy time temp services" and delorice cracks me up! "WE MUST SQUEEZE MY CAT'S ANAL GLANDS!" Deloris is so anal, but she has a webcams up all over her house and has her own website, where people do nothing more than watch her clean!
the cast is great the humor is amazing..and I really recommend giving it a go. it's shotime, they get away with a lot
