Tru Davies (Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Eliza Dushku) is about to start a prestigious hospital internship, when her plans unexpectedly fall through and she's forced to get a job working the third shift at the city morgue. On her first night there--alone, of course--the corpse of a murdered woman asks her for help. (Hey, if it can happen to Haley Joel Osment...) A little investigating, a surprising morning wake-up call that finds her reliving the same day and a mad dash across town leads Tru to the discovery that not only can she help prevent the stranger's death but she can change disturbing events in the lives of her own dysfunctional family. So, is Tru Calling a crime drama, an action series or a younger, hipper C.S.I.? Mix all three, add a dash of young-adult angst, a pinch of family drama and a hearty helping of romance (did we mention Tru is having a secret affair with one of her professors?), and you have the bases Tru Calling covers in just the pilot. That episode, by the way, was written by series creator Jon Harmon Feldman, who has served as writer and producer on such shows as Dawson's Creek, American Dreams, Roswell and The Wonder Years. It's a good bet he'll continue to blend the show's emotional drama and action sequences smoothly. Why It Works: The intriguing concept is enough to reel you in, but it's the Alias-paced action that keeps you riveted.
