Hee! 80's commericals are probably hilarious to look back on now. 80's television shows were so much better than today's.

How'd the paper come out? Good I hope.

It was a research proposal for my anthropology methods course. I'm going to do a study on Culture Shock and Reverse Culture Shock in Day Camp Counsellors

it sounds a lot more complicated that it really is. basically im going to study how counsellors lives changes as a result of working in a daty camp and they reactions they have to returning to normal life (Basically going back to school) after camp is over and how the world at large treats counsllors.

You should have just said that. LOL I would imagine there would be some kind of culture shock or whatever, especially if they're at a camp in the wilderness. I remember when I was in middle school I went to a camp for two weeks in the middle of nowhere and we had to rough it and when I got back, it took some getting used to again.

And, we were only gone for two weeks. I never did that again!

well thats my offical title. I had to use jargon for the ethics board review least i sound like a first year lol

you couldnt pay me enough to work at an overnight camp esp. one in the middle of no where! I've worked at a fully outdoor day camp for two years (and i mean fully outdoors. we don't ben have flush toilets or sinks...) and it was enough wilderness to last a life time. I swear if we didn't go swimming at one of the municpal pools 3 days a week(BATHROOMS!) my bladder would have burstandI would habe gone stir crazy from all the damn nature. even rabbits and cute little frogs get old after a few weeks lol

LOL Yes! That's what I meant by roughing it. We had no bathrooms, running water or anything. Just a lake and it was gross. I felt so dirty. I never went to that camp again.

i am happy today we did have running water. no sinks, juyst a tap and a hose, but there was running water. of course we couldn't drink it because the pipes were too shallow and didn't meant municipal standards but we could use it for washing off mud and filling water ballons. we got a little spoiled cause they brought in water coolers this year for drinking water. THere wasnt much choice though cause you'd probably die from radiation poisoning if we drank the sludge from the Rouge River (thats the river that goes through the camp. we can canoe on it but thats about it lol)

how the hell can a perswon go without a shower for 2 weeks! or a toilet?! I would have hiked for civilization withint 2 days of having gresy hair

Well, they had those porter potties, which was nasty as hell...

I would have hiked, but it was like 30 miles from the nearest town and the nearest house was an old abandoned house that was haunted or something and they didn't have any running water, so it was moot.

It was gross! We washed our hair with bottles of water.

Oh God. PortaPottys dont remind me!Thats what we had at Chimo. The worst part was they only got pumped ever 2 weeks, and they were never cleaned, except on Parents night. Portapottys in the August heat is quite possibly the worst smell known to man. And idiotic teenagers would go in o nthe weekends and knock them over then the WHOLE camp, not just upper field would smell for at least 3 days. I have had campers who peed thier pants rather than use the portas,

One little girl kept doing the pee dance all day and I kept asking her if she had to go to the bathroom and she kept saying no even though i knew she had to. I thought I was home free when it was time to send them to the buses, cause once they are o nthe buses they are no longer my deal, its the bos moniters problem but no such luck. no sooner had i said " ok everyone you can go! see you tomorrow and dont forget your bathing suit" had Joyce started peeing her pants. She's standing there crying and peeing and I look at my co-counseller like 'now what?' we hosed her off and sent her to the bus cause her mom dind't send extra clothes (Stupid parents. Never EVER send a kid to camp without 4 things, sunscreen, 2 extra water bottles, spare shoes and a complete change of clothing. Its an outdoor camp for goodness sake!)

The next day I arrived at camp to be confronted by the supervisor asking why a camper peed her pants. the kid lied and told her mom we wouldn't let her go to the bathroom. PFFT! Luckily every speicalist we had that day varified that we had asked the kid every half hour if she had to pee. Apparently the kid and her mom thought that the portapottys were for the campers and we had a flush toilet in the office for the staff and Joyce was waiting for one of us to say she could use the real bathroom. HA! the office if a trailer 4 feet off the ground, with no plumbing.

Then the mom went in to a fit demanding to know why there wasnt a flush toilet on site, and why didn't we take her kid to the public bathroom in the conservation area next to the camp (its a 15 minute walk with no kids, a good 30 at least with campers to get to the bathroom! we only go there on cookouts and then we stay at least 4 hours to make it worth the trek lol). Luckily after my story was proven true, it was the supervisors problem. I more than did my job. I am only obligated to bring a camper to the bathroom if they ask, not tell them to go lol. ok im done rambling

Oh, I know. Porta-potties reeked... we were there for two weeks, but we had a company come up a few times and take away the yucky ones and bring new ones. LOL

Oh, wow. That mother sounds like a real bitch. The concept that you would take one child to use the real bathroom is just ridiculous. Unless you had several campers, why would you make a special trip? Seriously? And, what kind of parent doesn't send an extra outfit with them? I never go anywhere without a change of clothes. LOL I have like 6 outfits in my car at all times.

Yeesh! I'm glad you didn't get into trouble.

we never ever take kids off site jsut to do to the bathroom1 its jsut not worth it! it would waste an hour of the day and by the time we got back someone else would have to go and then they would bitch that we took those campers to the good bathrooms but not them. Its never good habit. its the portas or its the bushes. im not heartless, i let campers (mostly boys) who wanted to pee in the forest do it. we checkfor posion ivy weekly, and if it spares them from having to use the portas its fine with me. lol

She was a bitch and english was her third language and she tried blame me for the language barrier! she said I didn't explain anything to her on the phone when i made my pre camp phone calls and that i hung up on her. total lie! I was on the phone with her for 15 minutes (whereas the average first timer parent phone call takes 5 minutes. if its a return campers the call can take less than one minute.) I totaly told her all we had were portas but there wer flush toilets at the facilties where we swim (which was on tusedays-thursdays which i explained to her which she must have understood cauds the kid didn't ahve a bathing suit that day) and when we go to the cookout which she would know was coming cause she had to pay for the food! GAH!

At this point the supervisors already knew she was aliar and was just trying to blame me and that no parent ever called to complain about me, but infact several over the course of my 2 years there called to say how much their kids loved me and asked if i could be the counseller when they returned. I was golden for the rest of the summer. I actually got cocky and broke rules in my last week lol. I stole paint from arts and crafts and let the kids paint the fence near out camp site, one of the wood shelters (basically a shady spot) and the low ropes course. yeah, i bet the camp director was pissed when he saw that. luckily i was long gone and EVERYONE in the camp hated him so mysteriously, no one knew who did it. not even the rope speicalist who was 50 feet away on the high ropes lol
